Compass for Windows Mobile

June 19, 2010, 12:33 a.m.

We have just completed work on a compass app for Windows Mobile 6.x devices. It's nothing fancy (although it is much prettier than the other compass app on the Windows Marketplace for Mobile). This will be one of our last programs developed for Windows Mobile - all future efforts will be towards creating apps for the upcoming Windows Phone 7.

Description:
This is a GPS-based compass - perfect for phones that don't have a digital compass sensor built-in. It displays your speed, direction, latitude, and longitude around a rotating compass rose that points north. Requires GPS. To operate, start the app, wait for it to load and to begin to receive GPS coordinates. Then move about 10-20 feet in any direction. The compass rose will rotate to point north. Important: You must be moving for it to operate. To read, the top of the phone should be pointed towards in the direction of travel.

Features:
  • Rotating compass rose that points north
  • Displays your speed and direction
  • Displays your latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes, seconds
  • Compass rose resizes for nearly any screen resolution
Release notes:
Screen resolutions other than 480px wide may incur a noticable performance hit on app startup as it resizes the compass.

The compass dial rotates to point north. The black tick at the top points to the current direction of travel.
